There was a time when I accepted what I was told and, in the wonderful way in which the mind works, accepted the discrepancies as they arose.
This allowed me to start life secure in the knowledge that we live on a flat earth. It’s obvious.
No star in the sky greeted my eye at night. Those pin pricks of light are just ‘holes in the curtain’ which separate man from the heaven.... and heaven must be up there because it’s inconceivable for it to be below ground and, thus, we have a place for the opposite of heaven which we may as well call hell. As hell is hot then heaven must be cool and - how satisfying to have it all sorted out. What temperature is heaven? - er - what about seven.
When Galileo started his nonsense about the Earth not being the centre of the Universe, I was a monk and scholar of the church and was quick to remind him that the Bible says otherwise. He saw the error of his ways after some severe re-education and went a bit quiet about science for awhile. The sun goes round the earth and it’s obviously true because we don’t move and the sun goes across the sky.
When Moses came down from the mountain and told us we were special, we knew it to be true. Who else meets God and comes back with proof in the form of stone tablets? Damn right we’re special and we’ll kill our enemies and our Special Tribal God will ‘Smite any enemies.’ that we may have missed. That settled that.
When Jesus came along with that rubbish about a Universal God, we knew that was wrong because we were special. He said he hadn’t come to change the law but he was talking about the ten commandments. When it came to our ‘other law’ - the one which is based on how to avoid Mosaic law because - after all - we are special and therefore perhaps can treat outsiders as ... er ... ‘less than special.’ ... Jesus was very rude and suggested that the Talmud made naught of God’s law. We dealt with him and just to make it clear. Christ is your Messiah - not ours. In our mind he was not the messiah we wanted or expected and so we’re going to wait for another.
It’s wonderful how easy it is to feel secure if you just accept what you’re told.
I’m just killing time while I wait for the next stoning. I had another brick through the window yesterday. It’s an emerging pattern. It’s a beautiful day in the Blue Mountains and I’ll go and watch the final of the Gearin Hotel/ BLUFM Songwriter Challenge tonight. I’ve already seen great talent so it will be a good evening and I’ll check windows when I return.
I remember being deeply shocked, as a lapsed Catholic teenager, to hear a well spoken bishop almost airily dismiss the value of Christ as a religious leader if He had not been resurrected. Somehow the value of that central core to Christianity had been deemed ‘not particularly important.’ when my early developing mind filed it away. Jesus was ‘nice’. He was kind, he was gentle and he suffered the little children which was a damn sight more than most adults did. He lived in a rather nasty and brutal society that I was happy not to be a part of.
‘The Book of the Damned.’ was a revelation. Written by an obscure and driven man named Charles Fort in the early nineteen hundreds, this book was a painstakingly researched book of oddities. Frogs falling from the sky. Coal and fishes falling from the sky, nails found in seams of ancient coal, fossilised shoe prints. He scoured the journals and records of his day to find oddity after oddity which just didn’t fit into the established scheme of things. A huge ‘wow’ factor. It battered my mind with ‘things which cannot be ... but are.’
In the same way in which Galileo was treated so was Immanuel Velikovsky.
Velikovsky was a friend of Einstein - given as both time frame and reference - and was highly respected as an expert scholar in many fields. He was erudite and curious. His curiosity led him to examine the Old Testament and to come to the conclusion that, as most of it appeared to be a true record of events, albeit some of them miraculous, there was one event which even the most enthusiastic and glowing writers of the bible would draw back from stating and that is that ‘The sun stood still.’ Mountains fall and the seas part but the sun does not ever stand still and yet - it is so stated.
If this was what the writer saw - and knowing as we now do that the earth is not flat and that the sun does not go round the earth - then the only obvious but unlikely scientific explanation would be a slowing in the rotation of the earth to the extent where there was a long day in the holy land..... and so Velikovsky reasoned... there must be a corresponding reference in the folk lore of those societies inhabiting the other side of the world as to a very long night. He found this evidence.
‘Worlds in Collision’ is a breathtaking book which literally rewrites history. Far from the accepted and still taught picture of a stable solar system into which the planets slowly coalesced and which has remained thus for millions of years, he paints a picture in which Venus and Mars have moved in their orbits within recorded and recent history.
There was a concerted effort by a very small group of academics who were directly threatened within their academic fields by the substance of the book. The effort to discredit Velikovsky was shameful and the subject of a book itself.
If I’m reading by a candle down the track, I want his books.
So Velikovsky is still not taught. His predictions about such topics as the temperature of Venus and the composition of its atmosphere were considered to be wildly off the mark in the 1950's yet have proved to be accurate. He was a giant amongst pygmies.
If you have some belief that science is conducted in a fair and open manner then you haven’t thought about where scientists are to find employment. It’s a niche market with salaries at stake.
This is a sobering thought. Tesla developed a method of sending electricity without the use of wires. He was tapping into the earth itself and could capture and transmit this energy free. No power stations needed. J.P.Morgan was financing Tesla but quickly withdrew his funding when he realised that there was no money to be made. That approach is so piggy short sighted as to be genuinely repulsive. J.P.Morgan had the power to help free the whole world of a dependence on fossil fuels and to free the world from certain slavery yet chose to bury himself in a trough. Up there with ‘The Worst’ in the hideously selfish stakes.
It’s a bit sad that we don’t need conspiracy theories to explain the way things are. Pure individual greed is sufficient.
Comets are a mystery to the establishment viewpoint. They don’t behave as they should - as you would expect of ‘dirty snowballs.’ They keep behaving in ways in which an Electric Universe model would predict yet what is taught by science is an electrically neutral universe. An electric Universe model does away with black holes, radically rewrites our view of how the solar system formed and dovetails into Velikovsky enough to satisfy me. It also explains comets and much more. There’s a website called Thunderbolts which explains Electric Universe.
By the way, according to the background radio ...I think the announcer just said ....that Bridget Bardot once said ‘I used to be Snow White but I drifted.’ Pretty cool for a star and an odd little syrcronicity to occur as I write abut cosmic snowballs.
We're still only talking in the ‘up, down and out’ of our three dimensional minds. We don’t even see in infrared.
I’ve now moved a long way from a flat earth and a fixed heaven. It’s a wonderful and incomparably richer, deeper and wider view but how was I to know unless I went looking and found sources everywhere.
The dangers of being both logical and literal. The ultra conservative Islamic cleric who seriously suggests that complete head covering is not enough for women. ‘We can still see their eyes.. oh no ... they might wear make up..... I know ...Cover up one eye!’
Hmm ... now we can’t tell if she winked or blinked. Was that innocent or seductive? Perhaps - if it is men’s lust which is the problem then instead of covering one of her eyes, she could wear mirrored sun glasses and the ravening beast in the eyes of women and which men are afraid of will be replaced by the faces of those who look with such stern and repressed gaze. Stern gaze will be returned and the women can laugh at the stupidity of men and still be able to keep the depth perception which two eyes allows.
This is the ‘warm’ song which bubbled up quietly and in the shadow of ‘White men have no Dreaming.’ Very simple. Could be a friend, could be a lover, could be another, could be myself.
It’s an E,A,E,E,B7,E followed by E,E7,A,C sequence x 3 ending in E,B7,E. Very easy to play and feels good to sing.
