Words change their meaning thus the discrimination that we all use every day to know right from wrong, to choose our interests, to enable us to vote for one party or another, to choose a religion or not, that discrimination – a positive – has become a negative and anti-discrimination drowns out that positive use of the word.
Anti-discrimination and hate speech laws are in the news. The question is not why do we need extra laws but who is 'hated' and for what reason. Hatred, as a descriptive word, is overused when dislike, disapprove, disagree or disgust is likely to be closer to the mark. Why should this aspect of life need yet more laws. I'm not condoning violence but dissent is essential for the good health of society. For this we need our discrimination - do we not?
